3 Championship clubs that should sign Ethan Horvath from Cardiff City this summer.

Cardiff City goalkeeper Ethan Horvath is free to leave the Bluebirds at the end of the transfer window, as he looks to make a step-up to keep his World Cup dream alive.

The American joined the Welsh club in 2023, following a successful season on loan with Luton Town, in which he was the first-choice goalkeeper in their promotion-winning campaign.

However, his time at Cardiff has been less than ideal. Horvath has been limited to just 33 league appearances over the last two years, which has thrown his spot in the US men's national team into doubt.

Reports emerged from transfer expert Pete O'Rourke on Tuesday that the 30-year-old stopper is free to depart South Wales this summer, with Championship and European clubs all interested in landing his signature.

With that in mind, Football League World decided to explore three Championship clubs who could make a move to sign Horvath this summer.

One club in need of an experienced number one is West Bromwich Albion. The Baggies have just Josh Griffiths and Joe Wildsmith on their books, the former left new boss Ryan Mason unimpressed in pre-season.

With the need for a dependable and experienced first-choice goalkeeper, Mason should look no further than Horvath, who already boasts a plethora of Championship experience, including a successful play-off campaign.

West Brom will receive a very hungry goalkeeper in return, who will be keen to impress to stake his claim in the USA's World Cup squad next year.

Middlesbrough were in and around the play-off picture last season, but never quite reached the level of consistency required to secure themselves a spot in the top six, which saw Michael Carrick sacked when the season concluded.

With promotion-winning Luton boss Rob Edwards now at the helm, a reunion with the goalkeeper who helped his Hatters side reach the Premier League could be a match made in heaven for all parties involved.

Boro will be getting a dependable and experienced keeper, who will likely offer a much more consistent pair of hands than current first-choice Seny Dieng, making him an instant upgrade on what they've already got.

The Teesside club also have the minerals to push for promotion this season, so adding another one to his CV would be ideal for Horvath's goal of being noticed by his national team.

1 Stoke City

Stoke City have arguably one of the best goalkeepers in the division on their books currently, with Viktor Johansson being the shining light in what was a rather uneventful season for Mark Robins' side last term.

However, this has naturally seen interest in their number one grow, and Premier League clubs are reportedly keen to bring the Swede to the English top flight.

If he does leave, Stoke will be eager to sanction a replacement quickly, and Horvath could well be that man. The American would be an ideal stabilizer to hit the ground running right away, after such a key departure for the Potters.

Johansson is a commanding presence at the back, striking confidence into his defenders. Therefore, Robins will need someone capable of doing the same, which Horvath certainly is.
