Cape Town Spurs are awaiting an imminent decision from the PSL Dispute Resolution Chamber (DRC) regarding the transfer saga of Asanele Velebhayi, Luke Baartman and Liam Bern, who are said to have signed with Betway Premiership clubs.
Velebhayi, who was priced out of a move to Naturena last season due to a hefty price tag, which earned him the nickname ‘diamond’ from the Spurs CEO, is understood to have agreed personal terms with Kaizer Chiefs, along with his teammate Luke Baartman.
While Spurs’ case is currently with the Soweto giants, AmaZulu are also in on the matter regarding their alleged signing of midfielder Liam Bern. The Cape club is expected to take issue with Usuthu in due course after resolving their matter with Chiefs.
The dispute stems from the two Betway Premiership clubs allegedly having signed the trio after the Urban Warriors’ relegation to the ABC Motsepe League, following their dismal showing in the Motsepe Foundation Championship last season.
According to the NSL rules, a team that participates in the third tier of South African football is regarded as an amateur team, meaning their players are eligible to sign for any professional team on a free transfer.
As a result, the players argue that they are free agents, while the club demands compensation for the development and transfer fee. Chiefs are said to be willing to part ways with funds to acquire the duo’s services.
Now, the two clubs await a ruling from the PSL DRC, with the matter expected to be resolved in the upcoming days. The football association’s hierarchy is still deliberating on the decision in the matter reflecting major problems in the country.
It remains to be seen how the issue will be resolved as the two teams gear up for their opening fixture of their respective league campaigns. In the meantime, Spurs are braced for life in the third division of South African football.
