Enzo Maresca refused to confirm whether he sees Robert Sanchez as Chelsea’s answer in goal beyond the end of this season.

Sanchez arrived at Chelsea in the summer of 2023 from Brighton, but despite a strong start he made a number of errors and was replaced by Djordje Petrovic when he got injured, and ultimately didn’t win his place in the side back.

Despite the form of Petrovic, Chelsea signed Filip Jorgensen from Villarreal last summer and took the decision to stick with Sanchez as their number one.

The Spain international has arguably been his usual self this season, and whilst he’s made a number of very good saves to keep Chelsea in games, he’s once again made a number of errors, with Jamie Carragher very critical of him.

The latest error was on Monday night against Wolves when Sanchez dropped a corner, which allowed Matt Doherty to fire home an equaliser, although Chelsea were able to prevail in the second half.

Sanchez has been defended by Maresca in public on multiple occasions this season, and he once again backed the Spaniard after the Wolves win.

Many fans have been left wondering what it will take for Jorgensen to be given a chance, with the Dane only playing in two league matches this season, whilst he’s been the Conference League keeper.

It appears it will take a lot more than it should for Maresca to drop Sanchez, but he gave his strongest indication yet that change could come next season.

“I’m thinking about this season, for this season, no doubt,” he told Kieran Gill when asked if he saw Sanchez as Chelsea’s answer in goal beyond this season.

Whilst this doesn’t point to Sanchez immediately being replaced it maybe gives a strong hint there could be change in the summer, and if Chelsea are going to compete at the top level they need a sign a top class goalkeeper.
