It looks likely that Burnley will be searching for a new manager this summer as Vincent Kompany edges closer and closer to the Bayern Munich job.

The Belgian has been with the Clarets for two seasons now, with his first campaign seeing him guide the club to promotion by winning the Championship with over 100 points.

However, his second season in charge at Turf Moor wasn’t as successful, as Kompany was unable to keep Burnley in the Premier League as they finished second from bottom and failed to crack 30 points across the campaign.

But despite the disappointing season ending in relegation, Kompany is very hot property, and it seems he is set to leave Burnley and take over at Bayern Munich.

It was reported by Fabrizio Romano earlier this week that Vincent Kompany was under consideration for the job at Bayern Munich as a replacement for Thomas Tuchel.

The Italian added that Kompany had been discussed internally by the club as they weigh up their options for a new manager.

It was then reported by talkSPORT that Kompany was keen on the Bayern Munich job, which comes after overseeing his second season in charge at Turf Moor.

A few days on, and it now seems likely that Kompany will be the new Bayern Munich manager, as it’s been reported that a deal is close to being agreed.

Mike McGrath has also stated that Kompany’s assistant manager Craig Bellamy is unlikely to join him in Munich but could be under consideration to replace him at Burnley.

While that may be the case, the Lancashire side may also look at ex-Hull City manager Liam Rosenior as a good option, given how he likes to play football.

Burnley may turn to Liam Rosenior as Vincent Kompany’s replacement

It looks highly likely that Vincent Kompany will be named the new Bayern Munich manager at some point this week.

Burnley will be returning to the Championship with a new manager on board, and while the club will be disappointed the Belgian has left, at least they have enough time to find a replacement before pre-season gets underway for the new campaign.

It's unclear at this stage what route the Burnley board would like to go down in terms of a new manager, as they could look for someone with more experience, or they could look to find a similar candidate as they had in Kompany.

If it is the latter, then the Clarets could possibly turn to former Hull City manager Liam Rosenior. The 39-year-old has surprisingly found himself out of work after guiding the Tigers to a seventh-place finish in the 2023/24 season.

Rosenior has already been linked to some vacancies in the EFL, with him reportedly turning down the Plymouth Argyle job, while it has also been claimed that he has no interest in the Birmingham City role.

Rosenior has obviously impressed teams, despite the fact he was moved on by Hull. The job with the Tigers was Rosenior’s first full-time managerial role. He was in charge at Derby County for a spell, but that was on a caretaker basis.

Rosenior was in charge at Hull for around 18 months, during which time he took charge of 78 games in all competitions, picking up 1.40 points per game.

Overall, he has managed 90 games, 34 of which he has won, losing 26; he has picked up 132 points altogether, averaging 1.47 points per game, as per Transfermarkt.

Rosenior doesn’t have a bundle of experience in the Championship or in management in general, but what could make him an ideal replacement for Kompany is the fact that he likes to play similar football to that of the Belgian - building up play with intricate patterns of play and having his players all playing towards one footballing philosophy.

His Hull team averaged 1.5 goals per game this season from the 13.4 shots they took. Meanwhile, the Tigers were, on average, creating 1.8 chances, which may be no surprise, as they averaged over 50% possession per game. According to Sofascore.com, Hull completed 475 passes per game, with an accuracy of 85.9%.

These numbers are similar to those of Burnley in the 2022/23 season, as the Clarets averaged 1.9 goals per game and took 13.6 shots.

They created just a few more chances per match, at 2.1. Kompany’s side had much more of the ball, averaging over 60% possession per game, but their accurate passing was similar, as they completed 479 per match, as stated by Sofascore.com.

Looking at those numbers, Rosenior’s Hull were producing similar to Kompany’s in the Championship, the difference being, of course, that those underlying numbers helped Burnley to the Premier League and Hull missed out on the play-offs. Kompany had, arguably, better resources (although that could be debated after Hull's January window) and a couple of years more management experience. He was also in a much weaker division to the naked eye.

If Burnley are looking for a like-for-like replacement for the Bayern-bound Belgian, Rosenior could be the man to take on Kompany's good work and continue it. They are not identical, and the pressure would be on the former Hull boss given what Burnley will expect to do in the Championship next season.

However, there are some underlying numbers that back Rosenior as a decent succession plan and his football, on the eye, is not totally dissimilar to Kompany's.
