Burnley will sign Jaidon Anthony from Bournemouth for £10m following promotion, but his Premier League record is a concern.

Burnley secured their promotion back to the Premier League on Monday, with Scott Parker’s side now aiming to win the Championship title.

Whilst that would be a nice bonus, the reality is that the Clarets have achieved their main objective, and attention turns to building a squad that can compete in what many regard as the best league in the world.

Burnley know from experience how difficult the jump between the top two divisions can be, with Vincent Kompany’s side going down with a whimper last season having previously won the Championship with ease.

Burnley must get their recruitment right this summer

There will be a hope among fans that the hierarchy have learnt from the relegation, and it’s about not repeating those mistakes.

Arguably the most important factor for any promoted club is getting recruitment right, which is something the Clarets failed to do last time out.

Promotion to the Premier League brings enormous riches, and the current owners have splashed the cash in the past, so a decent budget should be available to Parker.

So, it’s about using that money properly, and if Burnley are to survive, they need to get virtually every deal right.

Jaidon Anthony has yet to prove himself in the Premier League

One move has already been completed by Burnley, with Jaidon Anthony now a permanent member of the squad as promotion triggered a £10m transfer from Bournemouth.

In one sense, that is a no-brainer for the club, as Parker rates Anthony, and the 25-year-old was hugely influential in their promotion, scoring seven goals and registering the same number of assists.

It’s not just the end product either, as Anthony is a hard worker, he has real pace, and he offers a direct threat.

Plus, he is settled in the squad, and popular with the fans, so you could argue it’s £10m very well spent.

Yet, there will be one lingering concern heading into the new season, as Anthony’s record in the top-flight is underwhelming.

He has managed just three goals and one assist across 33 appearances, with the majority of those coming in the 2022/23 season.

Admittedly, it’s a small sample size, and Anthony only played 1,400 minutes in that period, but it’s not a record that will excite Burnley fans.

It’s crucial that all attacking players contribute next season, and Parker will want double figures in terms of goals and assists, at least, from those wide forwards, and it remains to be seen whether Anthony can hit those numbers.

Burnley can’t afford a repeat of last season when they return to the Premier League, so they must be ruthless when it comes to building a squad that can compete with the elite.

At £10m, Anthony isn’t a big-money purchase, and the club will ultimately be judged on how the whole transfer window plays out.

But they don’t want a repeat of their last Premier League experience, and Anthony will need to improve on his own return to the top-flight if he is to help Burnley survive at that level.
