Burnley and Sheffield United are the latest clubs to show an interest in Liam Millar after his impressive season on loan at Preston from Basel.

The 24-year-old joined Liverpool as a teenager, but after loan spells at Kilmarnock and Charlton, he left Anfield for Basel in search of regular game time.

Millar has made almost 100 appearances for the Swiss giants, but he returned to English football 12 months ago, agreeing a season-long loan with Preston.

And, whilst it was a mixed campaign for North End, who couldn’t sustain their push for a play-off place, Millar did impress, as he registered five goals and five assists in 35 appearances, with the majority of his outings coming as a wing-back.

The Canadian international showed real moments of quality at times too, so it’s perhaps no surprise that his form has caught the eye.

That’s after the Sun revealed that a host of clubs are monitoring his situation, which includes Preston, who want to make his stay at Deepdale a permanent one. But, they face fierce competition for his signature, with the Clarets and the Blades joining Millar’s list of admirers.

Liam Millar is being eyed up by Premier League relegated duo Burnley and Sheffield United. The Basel midfielder, 24 has also attracted interest from several Championship clubs.

That includes Preston, where he spent last season on loan and Sunderland as well as a number of European sides. Millar has one year left on his contract with the Swiss Super League side and that has alerted Vincent Kompany's side as well as the Blades.”

Liam Millar would be a smart addition for Championship clubs

Anyone who saw Millar play for Ryan Lowe’s men this season will recognise that he has real talent. He is someone who can carry the ball well, and he produced some magic moments in the season.

The challenge is to do that on a more consistent basis, but his numbers are very impressive for someone who is a wing-back, and it’s fair to say he wasn’t playing in the most free-flowing team in the league.

With a year left on his deal, combined with Basel’s struggles, you can’t imagine he would command a huge fee, so it makes sense that there is a lot of interest in the player.

So, it seems as though Millar could have a big decision to make, and the fact he has had several loan spells in his career shows that he values regular football, which is no doubt going to be a factor in his next move.

The prospect of joining the likes of Sheffield United or Burnley, who many expect to be in the promotion mix next season, will appeal, but he will want to feature regularly.

Whoever does land Millar will be making a shrewd signing though, and, at 24, he is someone who has plenty of room for improvement, and he could become a very good player in the Championship in the years to come.
