Brazil are set to sack head coach Dorival Junior with immediate effect after the nation’s 4-1 defeat to Argentina.
Brazil’s difficult World Cup qualification campaign continued during March’s international break.
The five-time world champions beat Colombia in Brasilia, before a heavy loss to Argentina in Buenos Aires. The 4-1 defeat to their arch-rivals leaves Brazil fourth in South America’s qualification table, a huge 10 points behind Argentina.
UOL Esporte are reporting that a decision will now be made to terminate Dorival Junior’s contract.
The 62-year-old has been in charge of the Selecao since January 2024 but has endured a turbulent reign. He’s won just five of his 15 games in charge, while Brazil exited last summer’s Copa America at the quarter-finals.
Brazil have been linked with appointing Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti as their next coach. The Italian’s deal with Real Madrid runs until 2026 though he has been backed to step down at the Spanish champions in the summer.
The five-time Champions League winner would be a leading contender to lead Brazil towards the 2026 World Cup, if available.
