Borussia Dortmund have continued their winning run after the international break. BVB kicked off Bundesliga Matchday 8 by beating Werder Bremen 1-0 (0-0) in front of a sold-out SIGNAL IDUNA PARK to go top of the table overnight.

BVB performed dominantly in front of 81,365 spectators but found too few gaps in their visitors' compact defence or failed to beat keeper Zetterer. A perfect pass from Can to Brandt led to the highly-deserved goal that made it 1-0 in the 67th minute.

The scenario:   Fourth against 14th. While BVB had won the previous four matches, Werder had suffered defeat in three of their last four games. The Black & Yellows were on a 19-match home unbeaten streak in the Bundesliga stretching back into last season (their best run in six years); the Green & Whites had lost each of their previous six away matches (their worst run in 43 years).

Personnel matters:   Bensebaini and Sabitzer were available again following suspension and injury respectively. Moukoko joined Duranville, Meunier and Morey on the sidelines with a thigh strain. There was only one change to the starting line-up compared to the Union Berlin game, with Brandt replacing Bynoe-Gittens.

Tactics:   Borussia lined up in their 4-2-3-1 formation to face an opponent that defended in a 5-3-2 system and pushed the wide players far forward when in possession of the ball. Brandt was nominally deployed on the left of the attacking midfield but popped up all over the pitch when the Black & Yellows had possession, while Malen and Reus were happy to move in between Bremen's five-man and three-man backlines.

The match & analysis:BVB created their first chances early on: Werder keeper Zetterer really struggled to deal with a 20-metre thunderbolt from Malen (6) and Wolf headed a corner narrowly wide of the left upright (7). Werder initially switched at speed and found plenty of gaps in the Dortmund defence, with Nmecha making two important clearances in front of his own penalty area.

It was at times a downright disjointed match, in which the Black & Yellows only registered their next shot in the 24th minute – and it was a dangerous one: Zetterer turned Ryerson's low strike from 18 metres behind for a corner. Werder now looked more passive and BVB were well in the game again from this point on. Malen repeatedly made successful dribbling runs. And Brandt was unstoppable too. He played a one-two with Reus to tee the captain up, but the shot from the left corner of the six-yard box was not precise enough (32). Overall, the final ball was lacking precision and in some cases the rub of the green too. Malen did not have it when he pulled the trigger right-footed on the right of the box following a Füllkrug pass shortly before the break, with Zetterer keeping it out.

The second period, which was entirely dominated by BVB, was eight minutes old when Malen volleyed a diagonal ball from Reus narrowly wide of the left upright. Overall, however, Bremen's last line was rarely breached. There was somehow always a last-ditch intervention before things could become really dangerous.

But then Can played precisely the ball that was required. Substitute Reyna passed the ball from a centre-right position into the middle towards his captain and he found not only the gap in a tightly packed Bremen defence but also Brandt, who lifted the ball over Zetterer as he came charging out to make it 1-0 (67).

Borussia retreated after taking the lead, lost the ball too easily during their build-up play and had to overcome their first heart-in-mouth moment in the 82nd minute when substitute Njinmah could fortunately only shoot from a tight angle, Kobel making the save with his foot. At the other end, the stand-out Nmecha initially missed a shot following a counter-attack (83) and saw his attempt a short while later turned behind for a corner. Reyna and Haller were denied by the head and hip of a Bremen player respectively (89/90+2), meaning the game remained on a knife edge until the five minutes of added time were up.

Outlook:   Six games now await in the space of 18 days: next up are trips to Newcastle on Wednesday (21:00 CET) and then to Frankfurt on Sunday (15:30 CET).
