Chelsea defender Levi Colwill says Chelsea’s Club World Cup win proves they can challenge for the Premier League next season.

The 22-year-old started five of Chelsea’s six matches at the tournament, including the dominant 3-0 win over PSG in the final, as the club lifted the trophy in the inaugural edition of the revamped tournament.

And Colwill has already turned his attentions to next season, and is backing his side to compete for major honours.

“I said at the start of this tournament that our plan is to win it and people looked at me as if I was crazy,” he said. “So I’m going to say the exact same thing now going into the Premier League and Champions League.

“It was a statement victory and, in the future, if we keep winning trophies then everyone will give us the love that we deserve.

“But we’ll only know that in he future. I think we’re ready and we’ll see next season.

“In the future, I think this will be the biggest tournament in the world,” Colwill said, echoing his manager Enzo Maresca’s thoughts on the competition.

When asked if it is better than the Champions League, the defender answered: “I reckon in the future, yes. And I’ve won it.

“We were the first team to ever win it. That’s huge. Playing games every four or five days, it’s been amazing. Playing with sold-out stadiums, playing against teams that you’d never had the chance to play against. I’ve really enjoyed it.

“I might just be saying that because we’re winners now, but I have to be honest, it’s been good.”

Chelsea left PSG shell-shocked, scoring three times in a rampant first half. Cole Palmer netted twice in the space of eight minutes, before new signing João Pedro added a third just two minutes before the break.

“For the fans, they get bragging rights on every other club in the world,” Colwill continued. “As a club, we’ve won everything.

“That’s something to be proud about. For myself, this is the second trophy that I’ve won this season. It’s huge and hopefully we can keep pushing on as a club and as a team and win loads more.”

Despite the Blues being labelled as the underdogs heading into the final, Colwill was adamant before the match that they “weren’t scared to play against anyone”.

“Being Chelsea is having the identity that you are going to win every game,” he said.

“That’s what we have done today. We knew how good they were, so we gave them our respect. But like I said, we’re Chelsea. We go into every game knowing or thinking that we have got a chance to win. That’s what we have done today, and the boys were amazing.”
