Reliable reporting in England has now confirmed a loan offer launched by Borussia Dortmund for Manchester City’s Claudio Echeverri.

The Argentine teenager only arrived at the Etihad Stadium earlier this year, joining from River Plate in January 2025, but has already been at the centre of transfer speculation as he looks to intensify his development within the European game.

Echeverri, regarded as one of South America’s brightest young playmakers, has made a handful of appearances under Pep Guardiola and found the net during City’s FIFA Club World Cup campaign. Despite those early flashes of promise, the club are still exploring whether a loan move may accelerate development.

Manchester City’s wider squad planning has also played a role in shaping Echeverri’s short-term future. With significant investment in midfield additions this summer – including Tijjani Reijnders and Rayan Cherki – first-team opportunities could be limited. That has naturally led to discussions around a temporary move abroad, with several clubs across Europe showing strong interest.

Echeverri’s situation also echoes conversations around other City youngsters this summer. James McAtee, for example, was subject to Bundesliga interest before joining Nottingham Forest permanently, while Sverre Nypan has joined Middlesbrough on loan.

Now, according to new reporting from The Athletic’s Jordan Campbell, Borussia Dortmund have made a loan offer for Manchester City attacking midfielder Claudio Echeverri, which also includes an option to buy.

The Premier League giants are said to be weighing up the German club as a possible destination for the teenager, but do not want a buy option included within any deal for the player as they rate the 19-year-old highly.

At this stage, the decision rests on how firmly City wish to maintain control of Echeverri’s long-term future. While Dortmund have a proven track record of nurturing young talents into global stars, City are reluctant to lose a player they see as central to their post-Pep Guardiola era squad planning.

A loan without a purchase clause may yet be negotiated, but whether the German club would accept such terms is unclear. Another avenue could be Girona, where Manchester City would retain full ownership and have the comfort of their City Football Group structure ensuring regular game time in a competitive league.

Much will depend on whether Echeverri himself favours a Bundesliga adventure over La Liga development within the group. What is clear is that Manchester City intend to take a patient but firm approach with one of their most prized prospects.
