Birmingham fan backs Craig Dawson move, calling the veteran defender a "fantastic" fit as Blues chase Championship promotion.
This article is part of Football League World's 'Terrace Talk' series, which provides personal opinions from our FLW Fan Pundits regarding the latest breaking news, teams, players, managers, potential signings and more...
Craig Dawson is a name that continues to carry weight in English football circles, and with his exit from Wolves now imminent, Birmingham City have reportedly entered the race to land the veteran centre-back.
FLW's Blues Fan Pundit Jason Moore was asked whether Dawson would be a coup for the club, and he believes that if a deal were to be done, it would be an astute and timely signing as Birmingham plot back-to-back promotions.
With Derby County and Wrexham also reportedly interested, competition for Dawson's signature is strong. But Jason believes that Birmingham would be the ideal landing spot, and that the 35-year-old would fit in seamlessly.
"Craig Dawson, I would 100% take him," Jason told FLW.
"Granted, yes, he is 35, but I think any move he makes now, unless it is to a struggling Championship side, he will be aware that he is not going to be playing every single game. If he comes to Blues, it is an exciting project, and I think Dawson at 35 would be perfect."
Dawson's Premier League pedigree is a major draw. Still, Jason is just as enthusiastic about the impact he could have behind the scenes: "It's an experienced head in the dressing room who is more than aware he is not going to be starting every week, but he is going to be part of something exciting."
"And if hypothetically we were to go and get promoted, imagine having his knowledge of the Premier League in the squad as well."
Head coach Chris Davies already has several defensive options to call on, including the exciting signing Phil Neumann, who arrives from 2. Bundesliga side Hannover 96.
However, Jason sees Dawson as a different kind of asset: "I think he would be fantastic to have, and even better on a free transfer as well," he added.
Wage demands may be the biggest obstacle. Reports suggest Dawson was earning £67,000 per week at Wolves, a figure that could be out of reach for most Championship sides.
But Birmingham's momentum, coupled with the ambition to return to the top flight and the proximity to Dawson's current home, could be enough to tilt the scales in their favour.
With a new stadium project already underway and the buzz of their League One title win still fresh, Birmingham have made their intentions clear: top-flight football is the target.
Dawson, who has featured in over 150 top-flight matches across spells with West Brom, Watford, West Ham and Wolves, could be the steady hand that helps guide them there.
Jason concluded, saying, "I am absolutely more than down to have Craig Dawson.
