Bell memorialised in Oxford Dictionary of National Biography | OneFootball

Manchester City legend Colin Bell is one of 238 people to be added to the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography (ODNB) as part of their latest update.

The ODNB is a collection of more than 63,000 biographies of significant, influential or notorious figures who shaped British history, refreshed regularly to incorporate those who have passed.

Bell died in January 2021, which falls during a period that has been captured in the raft of prominent people added to the ODNB this month.

Written by Club Historian Dr Gary James, the biography charts Bell's rise and covers his personal life, including the restaurants he opened after retiring from the game.

The midfielder is widely regarded to be the finest City player of his generation, making 501 appearances and scoring 153 goals for the Club during a 13-year stay.

Over his years at City, Bell acquired two nicknames amongst City fans, The King of the Kippax, after the famous terraced stand at Maine Road and Nijinsky, after the legendary racehorse known for his speed and stamina.

Few players have left such an indelible mark on City.

In 2004, our fans voted to name a stand inside the Etihad Stadium after him and his name is still sung regularly at matches.

He is now further immortalised at our home by a statue alongside his great team-mates Francis Lee and Mike Summerbee.

Our 2022/23 Home shirt, in which Pep Guardiola's side won a historic Treble, was inspired by the much-adored City teams of which Bell was an integral figure.

This latest recognition furthers cements Bell's legacy at Manchester City, in football and across wider society all over the UK.
