FC Bayern were beaten 1-0 at Aston Villa in the Champions League on Wednesday night. Bayern enjoyed more of the ball but struggled to find a way through, before Jhon Duran's late goal made the difference in a match that ended Bayern's run of 41 games without defeat in the Champions League group or league phase.

Bayern lined up with Manuel Neuer in goal and Konrad Laimer, Dayot Upamecano, Minjae Kim and Alphonso Davies in defence. Joshua Kimmich and Aleksandar Pavlović anchored a midfield featuring Serge Gnabry, Michael Olise and Kingsley Coman, with Harry Kane as the target man. Jamal Musiala replaced Coman at half-time, with Leroy Sané, João Palhinha, Mathys Tel and Leon Goretzka coming on for Olise, Pavlović, Laimer and Kim in the second half.

Goalless at half-time

Bayern were dominant for large spells and had their first chance when keeper Emiliano Martinez saved a Kane header, albeit from an offside position. Neuer beat Ollie Watkins to a long ball in midfield, Coman firing over at the other end. The home side had the ball in the back of the net when Pau Torres capitalised on a mix-up in the box, but the goal was chalked off for offside on review.

Neuer denied Amadou Onana before Gnabry fired over from a promising position. Kimmich saw a free-kick saved and Olise was only just denied by Martinez, who beat Laimer to the ball just before half-time.

Late setback

Ezri Konsa beat Davies to a Gnabry pass, with Kimmich also hitting the side-netting after the restart. Olise saw two efforts blocked and Martinez denied former Arsenal teammate Gnabry. Ian Maatsen fired over before a Musiala effort was blocked.

Villa took the lead when Duran ran onto a long ball and beat Neuer from distance. Munich went looking for a leveller but struggled against the hosts' solid defence. Martinez denied Tel and Gnabry before making another strong save to keep out Kane's header with almost the final kick of the game as Bayern came up short.

Bayern will be back in action on Sunday when they travel to face Eintracht Frankfurt in the Bundesliga.
