Bayern Munich are optimistic about a deal to sign Christopher Nkunku from Chelsea as talks continue.
The Bundesliga champions are in negotiations with Chelsea over a deal to sign Nkunku. The French forward is keen to leave Chelsea after two underwhelming seasons at Stamford Bridge with a return to German football the priority.
Bayern view Nkunku as an ideal option to boost their depleted forward line, with the 27-year-old’s versatility, availability and proven track-record in the Bundesliga appealing.
Bayern have lost Thomas Muller, Mathys Tel and Leroy Sane this summer. The Bavarians are also missing Jamal Musiala, who is unlikely to return this year from a serious leg injury sustained at the Club World Cup.
Vincent Kompany’s side had hoped to sign Nkunku on an initial loan, though Chelsea’s position is clear with the West Londoners only considering a permanent exit. It is understood that Nkunku also wants to leave Chelsea permanently.
Despite that stand-off, Bayern remain ‘optimistic’ that a deal can be done. Journalist Ben Jacobs has revealed that discussions have centred around various different packages in the hope of finding an agreement that suits all parties.
Bayern have turned to Nkunku after frustration in their attempt to sign Nick Woltemade from Stuttgart.
Amid Stuttgart’s reluctance to lose Woltemade, Nkunku is seen as a more viable deal and impressed previously in Germany, scoring 70 goals in 172 games for RB Leipzig.
He netted 15 times for Chelsea last season, but saw his minutes in the Premier League limited. The majority of Nkunku’s game-time came in the Europa Conference League. Chelsea have since signed Joao Pedro and Liam Delap to bolster their attack.
