But as promising as it sounds for Manchester City’s chase of the most prized player in the summer transfer market, one team does loom over the race to sign Wirtz. That is Bayern Munich. Now a new report suggests that Bayern feel that they are ahead in the race to sign the Bayer Leverkusen playmaker.

Christian Falk has reported for CF Bayern Insider that the Bundesliga giants believe that they’re ahead in the race to sign Wirtz. Furthermore, Falk reports that Bayern have a good relationship with Wirtz’s father and agent Hans-Joachim. Falk further reports that the close relationship between Jamal Musiala and Wirtz may aid Bayern’s chase to sign the Bayer Leverkusen star. But Falk also reports that the decision of where his future may lie remains in the hands of Florian Wirtz. Real Madrid and Manchester City loom as the other destinations for Wirtz this summer. Falk further reports that he believes that Wirtz will not sign a contract extension with Bayern Leverkusen.

Manchester City are well placed to sign Florian Wirtz despite Bayern’s presence in the race.

As with all German players Bayern Munich will always be at the front of the queue for their signature. Florian Wirtz is no exception. They have long held an interest in signing the German international. It has previously appeared that one day, Wirtz would play for the Bundesliga giants.

But Manchester City are well-placed to sign Florian Wirtz this summer. They do seem to hold the trump card in the race to sign him. That is Pep Guardiola and the role Wirtz would play for City. Kevin De Bruyne’s impending departure has created the ideal role for Wirtz in their squad. The opportunity to play under Pep Guardiola is also a strong selling point for Manchester City. Despite Bayern Munich’s moves, it does seem that City hold the trump card currently. Whether or not it helps them land Wirtz will be known in the coming months.
