Over 45,000 tickets have so far been sold for FC Bayern Women’s opening match of the Google Pixel Bundesliga season against Bayer Leverkusen on 6 September, making it the largest crowd that the Munich Frauen have ever hosted. And the club’s women’s players took centre stage inside the stadium ahead of the men’s curtain-raiser against RB Leipzig as Georgia Stanway and Giulia Gwinn were honoured in front of the sold-out crowd by president Herbert Hainer and board member for sport Max Eberl. Stanway helped England retain their crown as European champions at this summer’s Euros in Switzerland, while Germany captain Gwinn was recently named the country’s Women’s Footballer of the Year.
“An award like Footballer of the Year is always an award for the whole team, because you can only achieve things in football together,” said Gwinn of the acclaim. “I’m really looking forward to the new season, which is making a big statement with the opening game at the Allianz Arena in front of a crowd of over 45,000 people. That level of popularity is further proof that women’s don’t just play football but are starting to fill large stadiums more and more.”
Stanway added that every title pushes you on to win more, whether with your club or your country. “We are Bayern and we won’t let up. We want to win titles again this season. Selling 45,000 tickets with two weeks to go shows that football is football, no matter who’s on the pitch. We still hope even more fans will come to the Allianz Arena so we can have an unforgettable start to the season together,” said the England midfielder.
