Barcelona Reconsider Diaz as Nico Talks Break Down

Barcelona’s transfer strategy on the left flank has taken an unexpected turn, with internal voices once again championing a move for Liverpool’s Luis Diaz. The Catalan club had originally shifted focus to Nico Williams, but complications in negotiations have reignited interest in the Colombian international.

Nico Stalemate Frustrates Barcelona Officials

What appeared to be a done deal with Nico Williams has suddenly hit a major snag. Barcelona had verbally agreed a six-year contract with the winger’s agent last week, including personal terms. However, the process broke down at the final hurdle when “unexpected new demands” were introduced by Nico’s representatives.

These fresh conditions have reportedly caused unrest behind the scenes, with key figures in the club’s sporting department left “surprised and worried.” As one source described it, Barcelona are now unsure whether they can realistically push the transfer over the line.

With the club already constrained by well-documented financial limitations, such uncertainty couldn’t come at a worse time. The ambition was to strengthen Xavi’s squad early in the summer window, but delays have left planning in flux.

Al Nassr’s Big-Money Move for Diaz Complicates Picture

Adding another layer to the equation is Saudi Pro League side Al Nassr, who are believed to have submitted an offer in the region of £85 million for Diaz. That figure far exceeds what Barcelona could reasonably afford and presents Liverpool with a financial decision that could reshape their summer window.

“Luis Diaz is also wanted by Al Nassr,” one report confirmed, highlighting the scale of the Saudi interest.

The potential of such a windfall may prompt Liverpool to reconsider their stance. While Diaz has been a key figure under Jürgen Klopp, a sum close to £85 million could allow the Reds to reinvest in multiple areas, particularly with further squad rebuilding underway following Klopp’s departure.

Diaz Still Valued Internally at Barcelona

Interestingly, sources suggest Diaz was Deco’s initial pick to reinforce the left wing. Barcelona’s sporting director had reportedly identified the 27-year-old as the ideal candidate before the club diverted attention towards Nico Williams after the Athletic Club winger expressed his willingness to join.

“Diaz was the player Deco had chosen as the main option to strengthen the left flank,” the report states. But once Nico opened the door to a move, the strategy shifted internally. Now, with both deals proving complex for differing reasons, the original plan to pursue Diaz may come back into play.

Whether Barcelona can seriously challenge Al Nassr’s financial muscle remains highly doubtful. The Catalans may have to accept that Diaz, while admired, could now be out of reach—especially if Liverpool find Al Nassr’s proposal too compelling to ignore.

Barcelona’s Next Move Hinges on Key Decisions

As it stands, Barcelona face a turbulent few days. They must either find a resolution with Nico’s camp or re-enter discussions around Diaz—both options fraught with uncertainty.

Should neither deal materialise, contingency options are being quietly considered. Among them is Marcus Rashford, whose name has surfaced as a possible alternative if plans unravel further.

For now, everything remains delicately poised. Barcelona’s intentions are clear, but executing them amid financial limitations and fierce competition from emerging markets is proving increasingly difficult.
