A big game arrives for FC Barcelona as they now take on Niko Kovac’s Borussia Dortmund side. The first leg of their UEFA Champions League quarter-final clash, both sides will be aiming for a positive result here. However, with Barcelona having the home advantage, they will want to perform in front of their own fans.
For Hansi Flick’s team, this is a chance to bounce back after their recent draw to Real Betis in La Liga. The UEFA Champions League remains a real goal for the Catalan giants, and this is now the defining stage that will shape just how well they can work towards it.
Interestingly, this will not be the first time that Hansi Flick’s Barcelona and Niko Kovac’s Borussia Dortmund have met this season. They previously faced off in Germany during the league phase of this season’s Champions League campaign and Dortmund had the home advantage on that occasion.
However, it was Barcelona that ended up coming out as the victors in that game. They won 3-2 on that occasion, with Ferran Torres scoring a brace and Raphinha getting a goal as well. Now, both of those teams meet again and will each have their own home advantage to make use of across the two legs.
In terms of form, Barcelona remain unbeaten in 2025 so far and are the only team across Europe’s top leagues to do that across all competitions this year. Across their last five games, La Blaugrana have also managed four wins and one draw.
The Catalan giants have also managed to score 13 goals in their last five games, and have shown their defensive resilience by only conceding four goals. This kind of balanced approach can be crucial in a competition such as the UEFA Champions League, and Hansi Flick will need his team to remain composed.
Borussia Dortmund, on the other hand, have also showcased a knack for being a tough side to beat. Across their last five games, the Bundesliga side has managed three wins and two losses across both their league and the UEFA Champions League.
They have managed to score a total of nine goals across those five games, and have also conceded six goals in the same time. In fact, the German side has been unable to keep a clean sheet across their last six games.
This kind of defensive fragility could prove to be a weak point that Barcelona could look to exploit in this game. If they manage to do that, this could be a game where the Catalan side can really hurt their German opponents.
A good result here could really help out Barcelona in the second leg as well, and that will be needed as Dortmund’s home ground is always a tough place to visit. However, with Hansi Flick at the helm, this team has the capability to do something special.
