The brass at La Liga giants Barcelona have come to a definitive decision on their long-running pursuit of Athletic Club star Nico Williams.

That’s according to Mundo Deportivo, who have on Tuesday provided an insight into the latest developments behind the scenes in Catalunya’s capital.

The name of wide-man Williams, of course, took its place front and centre in the media headlines throughout last summer’s transfer window.

This came with the 22-year-old’s continued excellence for club and country alike having sparked widespread interest in his signature.

Barcelona, for one, pushed hard to bring Nico in for much of the summer, eager to unite the Spanish international with close friend Lamine Yamal.

At one point during the window, the transfer, in fact, was labelled essentially a formality.

In the end, an agreement could not be found, though, with Nico having therefore stayed put in the Basque Country with Athletic Club.

Rumours pointing towards a renewed pursuit on Barcelona’s part this coming summer have long been in speculation across Spain.

As alluded to above, though, if the latest word on the subject to have surfaeced on Tuesday is anything to go by, then those of a Blaugrana persuasion keen for Nico to arrive need not get their hopes up.

As per a report from MD:

‘The priority last summer was to sign Nico Williams. The club no longer has that idea. They believe the time to sign the Athletic Club winger has passed, that they won’t pay the 60 million euro buyout clause, and that the left wingers in the squad are more than enough.’
