Barcelona are gearing up for a busy summer ahead and one of their main operations could see them chase a move for Espanyol’s goalkeeping prodigy Joan Garcia.
Barça have identified Garcia as an ideal market opportunity and may push hard to sign the Spaniard as a direct competition for Marc-Andre ter Stegen next season.
Barcelona’s interest in Joan Garcia implies the club could be preparing for the next generation, one which could possibly be without ter Stegen, as he is not getting any younger.
According to Mundo Deportivo, Marc-Andre ter Stegen could be forced to reflect on his long-term role at Barcelona if the club succeeds in signing Joan Garcia this summer.
Ter Stegen is now seen as Germany’s starting goalkeeper, but staying there will depend on one thing: playing consistently at the top level.

With the 2026 World Cup fast approaching, any drop in minutes could put that position in doubt.
That’s where Barcelona’s current strategy creates tension. The club is looking to bring in a new goalkeeper this summer, not just as a backup, but potentially as the future first-choice.
If the new arrival has a strong profile and earns trust quickly, Ter Stegen could face more rotation than he’s used to.
At 33 and recovering from a serious knee injury, the German keeper is entering the most delicate stage of his career.
While he’s still under contract until 2028, the upcoming season could determine whether he remains Barça’s long-term No.1 — or begins to slide into a secondary role.
Keeping that in mind, ter Stegen certainly has a decision to make as Barcelona look to accelerate talks to sign Joan Garcia this summer.
