Atletico Madrid make the short trip to the Bernabeu to take on Real Madrid this evening.
The Spanish sides go head-to-head in the last 16 of the Champions League in the latest instalment of the Madrid rivalry. Evenly matched this season, just two points separate the sides in the La Liga table. In addition, both league meetings have ended in draws.
Atletico arrive into the contest after an important 1-0 win over Athletic Bilbao at the weekend. Julian Alvarez got the decisive goal to keep Diego Simeone’s side within a point of leaders Barcelona.
Real Madrid, in contrast, endured a disappointing night at Real Betis. Defeat saw the Spanish champions slip three points off the summit. However, Los Blancos have been Atletico’s nemesis in this competition, emerging victorious in all five previous encounters with Atletico in the knockout stages of the European Cup/Champions League.
Diego Simeone will be without experienced figures in Koke and Cesar Azpilicueta, who are ruled out of Tuesday’s tie.
It’s an otherwise full-strength squad to choose from, with Julian Alvarez pushing for a recall after his winner off the bench at the weekend.
The Argentina international has scored 21 goals in all competitions for Atletico this season, including six in Europe. He’s the club’s joint-leading scorer in the Champions League this season, alongside Antoine Griezmann.
Atletico predicted XI: Oblak; Molina, Le Normand, Gimenez, Galan; Simeone, De Paul, Barrios, Lino; Griezmann, Alvarez
