Nico Williams Eyes Glory at San Mamés Before Making Summer Decision

With his trademark grin and the poise of a player twice his age, Nico Williams continues to dazzle. But it is not merely his flair that captures the eye — it’s the clarity of his ambition. After lifting silverware with Spain last summer, he now wants to do the same for his club.

As reported by AS.com, “Now he wants to maintain his love affair with the Old Continent, but with his club, Athletic Club. The challenge is to take the two remaining steps: overcome Manchester United and win the title on May 21 at San Mamés.”

These are stirring days in Bilbao. Williams, still just 21, stands on the brink of history and potentially, a turning point in his career.

Manchester United Await

Athletic’s next hurdle comes cloaked in tradition but scarred by inconsistency. Manchester United, a team AS describes as having “more history than football and a very anarchic team,” reached the semis in the most chaotic of fashions, recovering from a two-goal deficit in extra time against Lyon, scoring three in seven minutes.

This unpredictability is what makes United dangerous. “Their greatest danger is that they have much more to gain than to lose, because this competition is their only route to the Champions League.”

Despite structural flaws — with an erratic André Onana and reliance on a young and unproven front line — United’s danger lies in their chaos. Garnacho’s resurgence and Bruno Fernandes’ surgical passing (over three key passes per game, 80% pass accuracy) are legitimate threats.

Yet Williams sees the opportunity. “Every kid wants to play at Old Trafford,” he said, referencing his excitement ahead of the tie. He remains grounded but inspired: “We have the goal of winning the Europa League and, next year, to crush the Champions League.”

Arsenal and Barça in the Wings

Naturally, such talent sparks interest. “Summer is approaching, and the rumors of potential suitors are once again beginning to surface,” notes AS.com. “Barça continues to mess around, and this way of messing around without any financial basis is starting to tire. Arsenal has always been a club on the prowl.”

The Gunners’ longstanding interest in Spanish talent is well-documented, and Nico fits the profile: technically gifted, tactically mature, and capable of playing wide or cutting inside. His current form is undeniable. “I think our motto of going ‘on the down low’ is the best. We’re doing very well, and we need to continue like this to reach the final,” he said.

Whether Arsenal or another Premier League club makes a move may depend on what unfolds over the next few weeks.

Focus on Legacy in Bilbao

For now, Williams’ heart remains in Bilbao. “San Mamés deserves it more than anyone. We’re doing very well to reach the semifinal we want. One more step before the final, and hopefully we can get there,” he insisted.

Athletic’s devotion to homegrown talent and its fierce Basque identity make Williams’ rise all the more special. His chemistry with brother Iñaki and their shared moments on the European stage give this run emotional heft.

Victory in the Europa League at their own stadium would be a fairytale ending. Only then will the next chapter begin.

Our View – EPL Index Analysis

From an Arsenal fan’s perspective, this is the kind of player the Gunners need to stay in the title race and compete deeper in Europe. Nico Williams isn’t just fast — he’s clever, selfless, and has that knack for timing in the final third that Arsenal sometimes lack when Saka or Martinelli are off-colour.

Seeing him speak about San Mamés and staying grounded is admirable, but make no mistake: this is a player ready for the Premier League. His mix of aggression and humility reminds fans of Alexis Sánchez in his prime, and Arsenal fans know Mikel Arteta would value a versatile winger like Nico.

The problem is timing. If Athletic win the Europa League, convincing him to leave will be harder. But if they fall short, the call of North London — and Champions League football — might be too strong to resist. Especially with Barça’s financial disarray and other Premier League clubs likely looking at the same highlight reels.

Arsenal should act early, decisively, and with the conviction that Williams could be a key piece of their project for years to come.
