Manchester City are close to reaching an agreement to sign Rosenborg midfielder and Aston Villa target Sverre Nypan, according to The Athletic journalist David Ornstein.

The Villa Park club went to Norway to present their vision for the 18-year-old in a bid to pip competition, but he was unconvinced and has opted to join the Etihad Stadium club.

Man City will be paying a record fee for a player from the Norwegian league to sign Nypan, and he is expected to go out on a season-long loan next term to continue his development.

The Villans finished sixth in the Premier League this term, missing out on a fifth-place finish to Newcastle United on goal difference. They must settle for Europa League football next season.
