Aston Villa have told Manchester United that Ollie Watkins is not for sale (h/t the Telegraph).
United have signed Matheus Cunha from Wolverhampton Wanderers and Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford this summer.
Despite these additions, manager Ruben Amorim wants an established forward who can lead the line.
United had identified Watkins as a strong option due to his experience in the Premier League.
However, Villa have no plans to allow the striker to leave.
Watkins has developed into one of the league’s most effective forwards. He registered 17 goals and 14 assists across all competitions last season.
The 29-year-old has become a key figure in manager Unai Emery’s system. He is a leader in attack and a player who offers more than just goals.
Watkins’ form, work rate and understanding of the game make him one of the most valuable forwards in the top flight.
Arsenal were linked with him in January, but their approach was rejected.
Villa view Watkins as a major part of their ambitions, especially as they prepare for European competition next season.
Unless there is a drastic change in Villa’s stance, United are expected to consider other options for the striker role.
