FLW takes a look at three Championship clubs who should look to sign Samuel Iling Jr from Aston Villa.
Aston Villa wideman Samuel Iling Jr is set to leave Villa Park before the end of the summer transfer window.
The 21-year-old is yet to feature for the Villans in any competitions so far this season, but does have some serious pedigree to his name.
An England youth international who was part of the Three Lions' Under-21 European Championship-winning side this summer, Iling Jr spent the second half of last season on loan with Championship side Middlesbrough.
Prior to that, he spent the first half of last season in Serie A with Bologna, which is incidentally the same level he was playing at with Juventus in the two years prior to signing for Aston Villa last summer, in a deal which reportedly cost the £11.8m to bring him to Villa Park.
Therefore, with him now expected to leave Villa on loan before the 7pm deadline on 1 September, he could be a real smart signing for a Championship club to make at this late stage of the window.
So, Football League World takes a look at three second tier sides who should be eyeing up a deal for Iling Jr.
Charlton Athletic have made some strong additions to their squad so far this summer upon their return to Championship football, and they could make another in the shape of Iling Jr.
The Addicks may be in need of an upgrade to Tyreece Campbell on the left wing, as the 21-year-old has put in some sub-par performances through the early weeks of the campaign.
Iling Jr can operate in any role down the left flank, and did so with Middlesbrough last season, where he bagged one goal and two assists from 16 Championship appearances.
At left-back, Nathan Jones looks fairly well-stocked in terms of strength in depth, with Josh Edwards, Amari'i Bell both comfortable in that position, whilst the likes of Kayne Ramsay could also transition from the right to the left if needed.
However, further down that line in the more advanced winger role, Jones perhaps isn't blessed with quality in numbers, and so potentially adding Iling Jr in ahead of Campbell could really sharpen their cutting edge in attack.
Also having potential strength in depth issues down their left flank too, QPR look like a side who could really use the injection of a quality wideman down the left.
With Ziyad Larkeche suffering an ACL injury in training and now facing the foreseeable future on the sidelines, 19-year-old and extremely raw Brazilian Esquerdinha has been left as Julien Stephan's only natural left-back.
However, he was one of two R's players withdrawn at half-time in their 7-1 defeat to Coventry City, potentially highlighting just how bleak the situation is at that position.
Iling Jr did, however, did transition into more of a left-back during his time with Middlesbrough last season due to injury problems on Teesside, and to the frustration of many Boro fans, he was beginning to blossom there just as his loan deal was coming to an end.
"I definitely settled into the left-back role and going up and down the pitch," Iling Jr said of his time at Boro via TeessideLive.
"I enjoyed that, bringing my parts into the team with assists, tricks and being creative." He could be an excellent option to drop into that role, and would by the sounds of it, quite like to continue developing and refining his talents there.
Iling Jr is a player who could also make a lot of sense for West Brom.
With Tom Fellows heading for Southampton, Baggies boss Ryan Mason may need to rejig his starting XI when it comes to his wingers.
Mikey Johnston and Karlan Grant have been operating on the left, but with Fellows' departure, one of those may need to move over to the right, as Jed Wallace may no longer be a viable starting option for Albion.
Whether it would be Grant or Johnston moving over, that would leave Mason extremely thin on the ground on the left, and so adding Iling Jr into the mix would really help to shore up his strength in depth in wide areas, whilst also potentially offer an upgrade to what he currently has.
Meanwhile, at full-back, Darnell Furlong is heading for Ipswich Town, which would potentially force Mason into doing what he did in the League Cup defeat to Derby - as Furlong was suspended for that game - and ask academy talent Alex Williams to come in and play right-back.
However, signing Iling Jr would hand Mason a player who can operate at both right-back and left-back, providing a potential immediate replacement for Furlong, as well as some extra cover for Callum Styles on the opposite side, something which is also currently absent from Albion's side.
Therefore, the Aston Villa man could make a lot of sense for West Brom, both in attack and defence.
