According to a recent report from MARCA, the growing speculation linking Emiliano Martinez with a move to Barcelona appears to be completely unfounded, at least for now.

Despite widespread media chatter suggesting the Aston Villa goalkeeper could be on his way to Camp Nou, the reality is far less dramatic.

As of now, there has been no contact, no negotiations, and no formal approach from Barcelona regarding the Argentine shot-stopper.

The rumour mill had gone into overdrive following images of Martinez seemingly saying farewell at Villa Park during the final home game of the season. That emotional moment sparked widespread belief that a transfer was imminent.

Aston Villa have ruled out summer exit

Interestingly, Aston Villa have since made it abundantly clear that Martinez is not for sale and remains under contract until June 2029.

The club also clarified that no discussions have taken place, not with Barcelona, nor with any other club.

It is worth noting that Martinez’s current salary is a major stumbling block for most teams in Europe, including Barcelona, who continue to navigate a fragile financial situation.

His wage package places him firmly in the upper echelons of Premier League earners, making it difficult for most La Liga clubs, especially Barça, to accommodate such an expense, unless there are significant outgoings or external funding.

While it is true that Barcelona are evaluating their goalkeeping options for next season due to uncertainties around Marc-Andre ter Stegen’s long-term fitness and consistency, no concrete action has been taken regarding Dibu.

Moreover, Aston Villa are not under any financial pressure to sell. With Champions League qualification secured for next season and Unai Emery’s project gaining momentum, they see Martinez as a cornerstone of their ambitions.

Only a substantial offer would realistically match both Villa’s valuation and the player’s wage expectations.

As for Barcelona, their focus may lie elsewhere in the market, possibly on more cost-effective or younger alternatives between the posts.
