Emi Buendia might leave Villa Park in the January transfer window as his playing time remains limited. The 27-year-old Argentine's situation has sparked discussions between Villa insider Dan Bardell and journalist Jacob Tanswell, with both loan and permanent transfer possibilities on the table while manager Unai Emery aims to strengthen his squad.
A devastating anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury has kept Buendia sidelined throughout the 2023/24 season, hitting pause on his development just as he was finding his rhythm in pre-season under Emery. Working alongside renowned ACL specialist Andy Williams, the attacking midfielder completed an intensive summer training programme.
His return to action has been modest, with just 37 minutes in the Premier League across seven substitute appearances and two starts in domestic cup matches, falling short of expectations following his £33 million transfer from Norwich City in 2021.

Emery's tactical setup, built around quick transitions and decisive play, has put Morgan Rogers and captain John McGinn in the spotlight for attacking midfield roles. Even with Rogers showing signs of tiredness, Emery continues to pick him ahead of Buendia, highlighting the Argentine's diminished role in the team's plans.
Leeds United has shown interest in reuniting Buendia with his former Norwich manager Daniel Farke, though discussions remain at an early stage. Italian giants Juventus have joined the race, suggesting a possible swap deal involving their promising 19-year-old Turkish player Kenan Yildiz.
The youngster, carrying a £66 million (€80 million) price tag, has caught the eye of Liverpool, Arsenal, and Manchester United. While Yildiz's valuation might seem high for Villa, including Buendia could make the deal more attractive.
In conversations with Villa News, Dan Bardell explained Emery's focus on bringing in attacking options this January. With Premier League financial rules in mind, Villa must balance their books carefully. Bardell said,
"If Buendia is getting frustrated with a lack of minutes, he could go out on loan somewhere. That would get his wages off the books and allow Villa to bring in an attacker, which Emery reportedly sees as a priority."
The Argentine's Villa journey shows mixed results. He arrived after an impressive Championship season with Norwich, contributing to 31 goals. Yet his Villa performance has been modest, with the ACL injury further limiting his impact. A move could help him rediscover the form that made him a standout player in English football.
The coming transfer window will be key for both Villa and Buendia. The club might step up their search for dynamic forwards, with Kenan Yildiz matching their goals in domestic and European competitions. While Buendia stays committed to Villa, his position at the club looks increasingly shaky. January will likely decide if he stays at Villa Park or seeks opportunities elsewhere.
