‘I’d have taken a drawn before kick but feel with better finishing we could have taken all three today.

We were the better team, and then playing against 10 men maybe feels like a point is disappointing, but with all things considered I’ll take the point.

Things to work on and hopefully soon a stronger bench that can make an impact on the game offensively.

Bring on Liverpool with NUFC togetherness both on and off the pitch.’

Jamie Smith:

‘Feels a bit weird in all honesty – good point at a tricky place is the basics but the chances we made, but couldn’t finish, will write their own headlines.

The striker situation needs to advance before next Monday, simple as.

Wissa is the key to a positive season, sort him and the situation with the Isak replacement can be addressed as and when appropriate.

Should have won this one but it all looks much better with a win next time out…’

GToon:

‘Decent performance and decent result.

I’m happy with that.

We need a goalscorer. Hopefully we get at least one soon.

Impressed that the lads stick together and played well against a good team away from home, after a difficult summer.

Special mention to Eddie for keeping going and preparing the team despite the obvious issue.’

Billy Miller:

‘Aston Villa will definitely be the happier side with the result.

A first half which saw them fail to muster a single shot whilst we created several decent chances.

The red card in the second half gave us the momentum after a slow start.

Elanga looked bright but didn’t take a fantastic chance to secure a dream debut.

For all the difficulties this summer, we’ve just outplayed a European rival away from home and will feel disappointed not to leave with three points.

If there is one game I am desperate to win, it’s next Monday under the lights.’

Matt Busby said…:

‘Two points dropped, no question, although had the sending off not happened we might have come away with nowt.’

Greg McPeake:

‘We had the first half and should have buried them. If only we had a striker in the team.

Second half Villa upped their game and were more competitive.

Red card – thought might be the turning point but not to be.

I’d have taken a point before kick off but feel it was an opportunity lost. Football is back. Bring on Liverpool.’

Chuks McPeake:

‘That was embarrassing not beating ten men. We need a striker.’

Tony Mallabar:

‘Well after getting up at 4.30am, tidying my bed, looked at my bedsheets and thought f… it, I will not write ‘sob on the holte’.

After the summer we’ve had, it dawned on me we’ve got more in common with Villa fans than I’d thought we’d ever would…

Saying that, Villa fans, that yippee i ooo song…just no, you’re better than that.

After the first twenty minutes I had this thought and it was said multiple times at ht…come back Isak all is forgiven, or buy a proper centre forward.

Sorry folks but that’s what made the difference today.

On the way home now, roll on luckypool a week on Monday.’

Mark Jankowski:

‘A solid point on the road for Newcastle.

The post match narrative will be around our need for a striker, which isn’t necessarily untrue, but overall we demonstrated today we’re an excellent team all over the pitch.

If we can sort out our striking options over the next week or two this could be a season to remember for all the right reasons!’

David Punton:

‘The opening day of another season and it’s a welcome point on the road.

We should really be talking about a win if we’d had a senior centre forward on the pitch.

The Isak situation was laid bare by our inability to find the net, especially after the home side were deservedly reduced to ten men.

The good news is we played pretty well.

A draw away from home is always acceptable and Villa is a tough place to go.

It feels like the Isak situation has created a malaise around the club, so credit to them for getting something.

Where you may want to level a criticism is the slow pace of replacing Wilson. If a number nine was out there today we win easily. Hopefully we see something happen this week. It needs to.

Welcome to the new season. Back on the Toon rollercoaster we go.’
