Eliesse Ben Seghir (19) is going from strength to strength at AS Monaco, playing a fundamental role in the club’s success both domestically and internationally. So far this season, he has five goals and three assists for the Principality club, however, ahead of Les Monégasques’ meeting with Olympique de Marseille on Sunday, Ben Seghir reveals how it all could have gone very differently.
Ben Seghir, who broke through under Philippe Clement late in 2022, came through Monaco’s prestigious La Diagonale academy. However, he has told Téléfoot how he had another offer on the table at the time, and from a local rival no less.
“Before joining Monaco, [Marseille] was the club I was closest to joining. I was really close to signing there. When Monaco call you, it is very difficult to refuse and my family had a big impact on my decision-making too,” Ben Seghir revealed, ahead of facing OM.
He added, “I don’t regret my choice at all and I am very happy at Monaco.” Given how prominently he is featuring for Monaco, and given his breakthrough for the Moroccan national team, it is a choice that has reaped rewards.
Les Phocéens do have a Ben Seghir on their books, albeit not Eliesse. Salim Ben Seghir (21), the older brother of Eliesse is still under contract at Marseille, although he is currently on loan at Swiss side Neuchatel Xamax; he has made three appearances for Marseille, having come through the ranks at OGC Nice, making two first-team appearances for Les Aiglons.
