Arsenal travel to face Preston North End in the Carabao Cup’s fourth round this evening, aiming to reach the competition’s quarter-finals.
Mikel Arteta’s team head to Deepdale after a thrilling 2-2 draw with Liverpool in the Premier League at the weekend, as the title contenders went toe-to-toe at the Emirates. The result leaves Arsenal five points off the pace in the Premier League, with the Gunners positioned third in the table.
Arsenal reached the fourth round of the Carabao Cup after a 5-1 thrashing of Bolton and are targeting another win against North-West opposition this evening. Arteta faces a selection headache in defence with Gabriel joining the list of absentees at the weekend and there could be inclusions for several of the club’s exciting academy graduates.
Ethan Nwaneri scored his first Arsenal goals with a brace against Bolton and the 17-year-old is in line for another opportunity at Preston.
Gabriel has joined the list of absentees in Arsenal’s backline after sustaining a knee injury at the weekend. Arteta has alleviated fears over the seriousness of the complaint, though the Brazilian will not be risked at Preston. William Saliba could return after serving a one-game suspension against Liverpool with Takehiro Tomiyasu and Riccardo Calafiori also out.
Academy graduates Nwaneri, Myles Lewis-Skelly and Josh Nichols could all feature, while there could be a debut for Tommy Setford in goal.
The 18-year-old signed for Ajax in the summer and is competing with 16-year-old Jack Porter – who played against Bolton – for a place in the side, should David Raya be rested. Second-choice goalkeeper Neto is cup-tied after representing parent club Bournemouth in the competition earlier this season.
Arsenal predicted XI: Setford; Nichols, Saliba, Kiwior, Lewis-Skelly; Nwaneri, Jorginho, Rice; Sterling, Jesus, Martinelli.
