Max Dowman has continued to stir excitement during pre-season, and now one of his former coaches has shared insight into the key personality trait that sets him apart. The 15-year-old is widely regarded as the next big thing to emerge from the Hale End academy, a belief underlined by his performances during the pre-season tour of Asia.
The fact that a player of such youth and inexperience was even included in the travelling squad speaks volumes about his talent. Dowman featured in every match on the tour and impressed consistently. His appearances against AC Milan, Newcastle and Tottenham all came as second half substitutes, yet he still sparked major excitement among supporters. He particularly stood out against Newcastle, winning the match-deciding penalty after a mesmerising solo run from outside the area.
Owing to his performances, the young midfielder has drawn widespread praise. Now, a deeper glimpse into his character has emerged.
Temisan Williams, one of Dowman’s former coaches at youth level, told Sky Sports: “When I left Arsenal, Max was one of the few players who personally said to me, ‘Thank you for everything you’ve done for me, how you’ve helped me, what I’ve learned from you and I wish you all the best.’
“I always remember this – and these behaviours are recognised by coaches in players.
“He was just a very measured young man, definitely mature beyond his years, even when you were talking with him one-on-one. Whenever you’re talking to him, he’d look into your eyes and he’d really want to understand.
“’What is it that you want me to know, what is it you want me to do, how are you going to help me, how is this going to help my development?’”

The youngster has clearly taken on board the guidance he received across various age groups, and continues to impress at Arsenal. Often playing above his age level, Dowman displays a maturity well beyond his 15 years. Supported by a strong development environment at the club, he will now look to follow in the footsteps of Ethan Nwaneri and Myles Lewis-Skelly, with hopes of establishing himself as a future first team regular.
Thoughts on Dowman’s development?
