Arsenal have suffered a setback in their pursuit of Rodrygo, after Xabi Alonso indicated the Brazillian winger will stay at Real Madrid.
The Gunners have been heavily linked with a big-money move for the 23-year-old as Mikel Arteta looks to strengthen his wide options in a bid to end the club’s long wait for the Premier League title.
Speculation over Rodygo's future intensified at the end of last season following his omission from the starting line up of the title deciding El Clasico, and reports suggesting he had grown disillusioned with life at the Bernabeu.
Arteta’s admiration for Rodrygo has led Arsenal to closely monitor the situation in Madrid, but Alonso’s latest comments may cool hopes of a potential summer swoop.

Speaking ahead of Real’s opening match of the Club World Cup against Al-Hilal, Alonso said: “I know what had happened in the final stretch, it was not easy for him.
“He took some time to reset his head and I see him wanting to enjoy and contribute.”
During his appearance on the ‘Podpah podcast’, Arsenal defender Gabriel was asked if he knows whether the Gunners will sign Rodrygo this summer.
“I don’t. No, I don’t, not really,’ Gabriel replied.
“But I’d like obviously. Rodrygo is a phenomenon, for me. He’s not at Arsenal… If it depended on me, I’ve told people already, he’s a phenomenon.
“His name is mentioned a lot. If it was up to me, of course.”
Arsenal are expected to complete signings of Martin Zubimendi and Kepa Arrizabalaga imminently, and have been linked with Benjamin Sesko and Victor Gyokeres as they seek to sign a top-class centre-forward.
