Mikel Arteta heaped praise on 15-year-old Max Dowman after his star showing in Arsenal’s 3-2 win over Newcastle.
The teenager replaced Bukayo Saka in the second half at the National Stadium in Singapore, and dazzled fans and staff alike in just his second senior appearance for the Gunners.
His first cameo against AC Milan in the north Londoners’ first pre-season outing had supporters excited, and that will only grow after his display against Premier League opposition.
The winger won the decisive penalty late on after a burst of pace got him into the box and away from Joelinton, who clumsily hauled Dowman to the ground. Martin Odegaard converted the spot-kick, and gestured for Dowman to go and receive the acclaim from the Arsenal fans.
Speaking at his post-match press conference afterwards, Arteta gave a glowing review of his teenage sensation.
"It is special,” Arteta said.
“What he's done today against this team in the time that he had on the pitch, it is something certainly not common to witness for a 15-year-old. We are extremely happy to have him.
"The environment that is around him, his family, the people at the club & academy are super helpful because they put him in this position so early in his journey, having a real chance and a real presence when he plays for the first team."
The Arsenal manager, who has overseen a stunning transfer window where Arsenal have signed six first-team players, also revealed that his side might not quite be done yet with their wheeling and dealing.
Viktor Gyokeres was paraded on the pitch as the Gunners’ latest capture after his £63.5million move from Sporting Lisbon was made official on Saturday night.
Arsenal fans had hoped to see new centre-back Cristhian Mosquera feature at some point against Newcastle, but Arteta explained that his fitness levels had to be looked after, hence the Spaniard’s absence from the matchday squad.
When asked if Arsenal would do any more transfer business, Arteta said: "Let's see. The market is still going on and we'll have to balance out the squad as well. I think we'll be open to see what happens."
On the signing of Gyokeres, Arteta said that he was “super happy” to have the striker on board, especially after the “long journey” it had taken to land him.
“He has been incredible,” Arteta said. “It was very clear from the beginning where he wanted to play and how passionate I felt from day one when we first spoke.”
He remained coy on whether the Swedish striker would feature in Arsenal’s next pre-season game, against rivals Tottenham in Hong Kong on Thursday.
“We will assess him tomorrow,” Arteta continued. “To get him up to speed with the right levels. We’re not going to stop him and speak to the medical team.”
