In recent days, Barcelona appear to have stepped up their efforts to sign a new midfielder.

The club are particularly eyeing a cost-effective option, which is why Thomas Partey has emerged as a target for Blaugrana.

The Arsenal midfielder’s contract at the Emirates expires at the end of the month, meaning he will become available as a free agent.

This has triggered Barcelona’s interest, with the Catalans hoping to sign the midfielder on a free transfer in the coming summer.

But as reported by AS, it appears Arsenal have not closed the door on Thomas Partey completely and are working on his renewal.

The Gunners confirmed so in a recent statement, in which they confirmed the exit of 20 players. Partey was mentioned in the report, but in a special list of three players, with which ‘talks are ongoing’.

This could come as a real blow for Barcelona as Partey would have been an excellent addition to the club’s already strong midfield.

Formerly of Atletico Madrid, Partey has been a vital cog in Mikel Arteta’s team this season, with only a select few players garnering more minutes than the Ghanaian international.

Partey’s prolonged stay at Arsenal will serve as a major boost for the Gunners. But for Barcelona, it will force the club to look for other alternatives in the market.

However, there is still hope and Barcelona can still hijack this deal so long they can convince Partey of their project and that they can register him as quickly as he signs a contract.
