Arsenal have equalled a record they will not have wanted to after losing 2-1 to Bournemouth on Saturday.
They were leading the game before the Cherries turned it around to win 2-1 late on, and the turnaround means Arsenal have now dropped 21 points from winning positions this season.
This is a huge amount and may be the primary reason why they are not calling themselves the Premier League Champions.
Mikel Arteta was furious after the game, saying: “We should have killed the game and we didn’t. On top of that if you defend your box in two set pieces in the way we have done you’re in big, big, trouble.”
It is interesting he mentioned set pieces, as for all the justified praise Arsenal received at the start of the season for their offensive set pieces, they have now conceded 12 set pieces this campaign, the same amount as Ipswich.
Perhaps even worse, set pieces have made up 38% of all goals that the Gunners have conceded this term.
Nicolas Jover, Arsenal’s set piece coach, has received a lot of attention and adulation this season, but this poor stat has seemingly escaped peoples’ attention.
Arteta, however, must now turn his attention to the matter at hand, the small task of overturning a deficit against arguably the form team in the world right now.
PSG beckon on Wednesday at the Parc des Princes. Arsenal go there losing 1-0 on aggregate and must try to beat the French Champions on their home soil.
The atmosphere around the London club turned slightly sour after the defeat to Bournemouth, with many fans criticising the team and manager.
It does not seem conducive to the togetherness you need to overturn a deficit in a Champions League semi-final. Regardless, that deficit is only 1-0 and Arsenal certainly have the players to make the comeback.
