Arsenal are deciding between pursuing either Benjamin Sesko or Viktor Gyokeres as their new centre-forward.
Mikel Arteta has made the signing of a striker his focus for the summer window, as Arsenal look to challenge for the Premier League title next season. The Gunners have reduced their shortlist to two options, with Sesko and Gyokeres the definitive options.
Arsenal had planned to pursue a deal for Alexander Isak, but Newcastle’s qualification for the Champions League has ended hopes of a transfer.
An internal decision will now be made between Sesko and Gyokeres. The former is a long-term target and was first approached last summer. The 21-year-old snubbed a move to the Premier League in favour of signing a new deal with RB Leipzig.
He has scored 21 goals in all competitions this season. Sesko is set to leave Leipzig after the club’s failure to qualify for Europe and has a release clause of €80m (£67.1m).
He is keen on a move to England and Chelsea and Liverpool are also considering moves to sign the Slovenian.
Gyokeres is available for a fee of around €70m (£58.75m) but transfer journalist Ben Jacobs is reporting that the overall package for the Sporting CP striker is higher, once wages and signing-on fees are included.
Manchester United and Chelsea are also interested in Gyokeres, who has scored 97 goals 102 games for Sporting over the last two seasons. The 26-year-old is keen to play Champions League football, complicating Manchester United’s pursuit.
