Arsenal have completed the signing of striker Viktor Gyokeres from Sporting CP on a five-year deal.

Following protracted negotiations, the drawn-out transfer saga has reached its conclusion, with both clubs agreeing to a deal worth €63 million upfront and a further €10 million in add-ons.

The 27-year-old made his senior debut for Swedish outfit IF Brommapojkarna before attracting the eyes of Brighton’s extensive scouting network.

After loan stints plying his trade at St. Pauli and Swansea, Gyokeres found his feet at Coventry City, netting 40 goals in 97 appearances for the Sky Blues.

However, the Swedish forward established himself as one of the most prolific forwards in the world at Sporting, scoring 54 goals in 52 appearances last season as the club clinched a domestic double, winning both the Primeira Liga and the Taca de Portugal.

Following injuries to Gabriel Jesus and Kai Havertz that left Mikel Arteta resorting to midfielder Mikel Merino in an auxiliary centre-forward role, the Arsenal manager worked closely with newly appointed sporting director Andrea Berta to identify Gyokeres as the long-term solution to the Gunners’ centre-forward concerns.

The 27-year-old becomes Arsenal’s sixth signing this summer, joining Kepa Arrizabalaga, Martin Zubimendi, Christian Norgaard, Noni Madueke and Cristhian Mosquera in moving to the club.
