Arsenal and Bayern Munich showed interest in Chelsea forward Christopher Nkunku during the winter transfer window and will return for him this summer, according to RMC Sport.
Nkunku has grown disillusioned after a torrid time at Chelsea. He reportedly wants to join a club with guaranteed Champions League football.
Bayern sporting director Max Eberl knows him from their time together at Die Roten Bullen.
Nkunku can plug several holes in the Bayern attack, especially at centre-forward, where Bayern do not have a back-up for Harry Kane. The 27-year-old excelled in a false nine role in the Bundesliga.
However, Arsenal are also in the race. Manager Mikel Arteta seems hell-bent on rescuing Chelsea duds and might consider using him in different attacking positions.
Nkunku was performing well in the Bundesliga before landing at Stamford Bridge. Arteta will back himself to unlock his ability.
Chelsea shelled out around £52 million for a player who’s done little more than jog around the pitch and score a handful of goals in a third-tier European competition.
His work rate is abysmal, and his body language reeks of disinterest. He was a marquee signing, but he has delivered next to nothing.
Instead of knuckling down and fighting, Nkunku wants to bail out for Champions League football he did not help earn.
Chelsea have many problems, and Nkunku is one of them. Letting him go might be a mercy.
