Inter Milan’s Lautaro Martinez and AC Milan’s Alvaro Morata are two strikers in “crisis” ahead of tomorrow’s derby clash.
This is the view in today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Corriere della Sera, via FCInterNews.
Inter and Milan both certainly boast plenty of firepower in tomorrow’s first Serie A derby of the season.
For the Nerazzurri, French striker Marcus Thuram got the season off to a blazing start with four goals to date.
Then, there have been goals from the likes of wingbacks Matteo Darmian and Denzel Dumfries. And midfielder Nicolo Barella scored a genuine goal-of-the-season contender against Atalanta.
Milan, meanwhile, have gotten three goals out of US international winger Christian Pulisic already.
Meanwhile, Rafael Leao has shown his undeniable quality with his goal against Lazio.
And then, other forward players like Tammy Abraham and Noah Okafor have managed to find the back of the net for the Rossoneri.
But Inter and Milan have not been able to rely on goals from their main men up top. At least to date.
If there has been a major fault in Inter’s season to date, it has been a lack of a clinical edge in the final third.
That was on show against Monza last weekend, when the Nerazzurri spurned all of their best chances in the first half.
And even against Manchester City during the week in what was undeniably a strong performance and a good result, the Nerazzurri were not able to make the most of their counterattacking chances.
The fact that Inter striker Lautaro Martinez has not scored a goal yet is a big part of the reason for that.
The Argentine had been relentlessly consistent in front of goal for much of last season.
That made Martinez the bedrock of Inter’s goalscoring potential.
But this time around, Martinez has yet to score or assist a single goal.
Meanwhile, former Juventus, Real Madrid, and Chelsea striker Morata has yet to score a goal for Milan after completing his summer transfer.
The Rossoneri will be hoping that Morata can find his edge in the penalty area soon.
For both Martinez or Morata. Tomorrow’s derby would be about the perfect time to finally get off and running for the season.
