Are Manchester City poised to swoop for an Inter Milan right-back?

Perhaps the biggest remaining priority for Manchester City to address this summer in terms of signings is the right-back position. Pep Guardiola’s squad does appear in desperate need of a quality right-back. Matheus Nunes and Rico Lewis would appear to be Manchester City’s current first-choice options for the position. Both players can play a role for Pep Guardiola. But if City were to sign a quality right-back, it would complete Manchester City’s squad for next season.

On that front, a new report indicates that Inter Milan right-back Denzel Dumfries is a potential City target. The Dutch international is a proven performer at the highest level and he is reportedly available for what seems to be a fair price. But is it a move City will pursue this summer? There is merit to the move but it may be a temporary solution to Manchester City’s right-back conundrum.

Denzel Dumfries is the latest right-back to be linked with a summer move to Manchester City.

Ciaran McCarthy has relayed a report from El Nacional for TeamTalk that Manchester City are in pole position to sign Denzel Dumfries from Inter Milan this summer. Furthermore, McCarthy reports that there is a £21.5 million release clause in Dumfries’ contract with Inter Milan. The release clause expires on July 15 as per the TeamTalk report. It remains to be seen if Manchester City will move to sign the Dutch international before the release clause in his contract expires.

Dumfries would add quality and experience to the right-back position for Pep Guardiola’s side.

If Manchester City wanted to add an experienced right-back this summer, Denzel Dumfries would be a quality signing. The Dutch international is 29 years of age and had a strong 24/25 season for Inter Milan. Dumfries made 47 appearances in all competitions for Inter scoring 11 goals and adding 6 assists. Those are superb attacking numbers for a right-back. But there is more to Dumfries’ game than goals and assists.

As a player, Denzel Dumfries is a solid defender. He reads the game exceptionally well which is a strength of his game. Dumfries isn’t the strongest one-on-one defender, but he is adept at this side of the game. He times his challenges well and he is a quick and strong player. His pace and athleticism help him get up and down the pitch well. If Manchester City wanted a right-back who could come into Pep Guardiola’s squad and contribute immediately Denzel Dumfries would be a quality signing.

Perhaps the only factor that may see Manchester City not consider a move for Denzel Dumfries is his age. The Dutch international is 29 years of age. That fact may see City look elsewhere. But, having said that, if Manchester City cannot sign Tino Livramento this summer, perhaps there is merit to the idea of signing Dumfries before moving for Livramento in the summer of 2026 if Newcastle aren’t willing to sell Livramento this summer. Esteemed Kompany sources have previously revealed that FC Porto right-back Martim Fernandes is also an option City could consider this summer. But that move would be costly and the young Portuguese right-back may not be ready to be Manchester City’s first-choice right-back just yet.

Summary.

Denzel Dumfries is the latest right-back to be named as a potential transfer target for Manchester City. There is merit to the notion of City moving for the Dutch international especially if they cannot sign Tino Livramento this summer.
