Anthony Gordon penalty incident at Old Trafford – Premier League panel rule on decision | OneFootball

Anthony Gordon scored at Old Trafford on Wednesday night.

However, it was an incident when he was denied a scoring chance that made headlines.

The first half incident saw Anthony Gordon running into the penalty area and just as he went to shoot, Gordon went down under a challenge from behind by Sofyan Amrabat.

The referee (Robert Jones) on the pitch didn’t give a penalty and neither did the VAR (Jarred Gillett) ask him to watch a replay on the TV monitor at the side of the pitch.

Anthony Gordon and his teammates were astonished to see nothing given, as were the Newcastle United fans not at the match, who saw the replays and quite clearly Amrabat brought the NUFC player down from behind, raking his studs down Gordon’s Achilles.

Quite obviously a stonewall penalty and as further evidence we all saw the shredded Anthony Gordon sock.

Now an official Premier League panel have taken a look…

‘The referee was correct not to award Newcastle a penalty during Wednesday’s defeat at Manchester United, says an independent panel.

Sofyan Amrabat stepped on the heel of Magpies winger Anthony Gordon as he ran into the box late in the first half, with United leading 1-0.

The hosts went on to win 3-2 and the incident, which Gordon said was “a clear penalty”, has now been reviewed by the Premier League’s Key Match Incident Panel.

In the verdict, which has been seen by BBC Sport, one panellist believed the “left foot of the defender impedes the attacker on the back of his heel ” and was enough to warrant a penalty.

However, the other four panellists felt otherwise and the non intervention from the video assistant referee (VAR) was unanimously supported.’

If you thought it was unbelievable that the penalty wasn’t given on the night, this is a whole other level.

You can’t get your head around it, such a clear penalty when an attacking player is brought down from behind.

Whilst the Premier League panel are anonymous, unconfirmed rumours are that they go under the code names of Ferguson, Cantona, Beckham and Keane…
