Liverpool have been linked with a SHOCK move for Newcastle’s player of the season, Anthony Gordon.

The 23-year-old has been in great form for the Magpies during his first full season at the club, having joined from Everton in January 2023 for a fee which could rise to £45 million.

The England international has scored 10 goals and made 10 assists in 34 Premier League games for Eddie Howe’s side this term, forcing his way into the reckoning for Gareth Southgate’s Euro 2024 squad.

He left Everton in acrimonious circumstances, handing in a transfer request, before signing what was described as a ‘long-term’ deal at St. James’ Park. It is believed that the winger’s current contract expires in 2026, meaning Newcastle could well be vulnerable to a bid.

The Saudi-backed club are in need of sales ahead of the summer transfer window in order to remain compliant with financial fair play and profit and sustainability rules, with both Alexander Isak and Bruno Guimaraes linked with the exit door.

Reports linking Gordon to a departure are new but according to the Daily Star, Liverpool are ready to test Newcastle’s resolve in what would be the first landmark deal of the post-Jurgen Klopp era. A bid of up to £100 million could be required to get a deal over the line.

Richard Hughes, incoming sporting director, and FSG’s new CEO of Football, will be in control of signings once Klopp goes and the Reds are looking at restocking their forwards.

Transfer questions have been raised about MOST of Liverpool’s attackers with Darwin Nunez, Luis Diaz and Mohamed Salah subjected to considerable scrutiny and the likes of Mohammed Kudus linked with a move inbound.

Gordon could provide another solution and is a player who already knows the club from top to bottom.

The local-born forward was on the books of Liverpool up until the age of 11, but he was let go before later joining the Toffees.

“It was another chance for me to grow,” the player told Everton’s official club website. “But that was hard. It affected me mentally and dented my confidence.

“I had to pick myself up and go again. When I got to Everton, I never looked back.”

And in a recent interview with Gary Neville’s The Overlap on Sky Sports, Gordon names Steven Gerrard as his childhood football hero, describing the legendary captain as God-like on Merseyside.

“Steven Gerrard was my football hero growing up,” he said. “Coming from Liverpool, he was like a God in Liverpool, and he was an unbelievable player.”

Further back and he described Salah as 'the best player in the world' in an interview with Rio Ferdinand on TNT Sports.

It would be an incredible homecoming for Gordon, a Steven Gerrard and Mohamed Salah-loving Liverpudlian who was a boyhood Red.
