A very proud South Melbourne FC posted this message and with it this superb collage of footage from Ange Postecoglou’s career that has taken him from their team to the Europa League winners with Tottenham the team that seldom wins anything.

“Ange Postecoglou – the man, the myth, our legend,” South Melbourne state in their obvious pride for their most famous son. “From his early days as a Hellas junior, to a championship-winning captain and coach, Ange has gone on to become a serial winner wherever he’s been. His football journey is truly one of a kind. Now, he stands as a European champion with Spurs,” the Aussie club states before introducing their video which of course features his time at Celtic.

“Here’s a look at his incredible journey.”…

Well that was well worth a watch! Ange is a winner all the way and even at Tottenham, a club that just doesn’t seem to have a winners mentality, Ange prevailed. He arrived at Celtic when we were at our lowest point of this century and revolution was in the air after the dreadful Covid season.

Eddie Howe had kept Celtic waiting before deciding against taking the job and amid the turmoil Mark Lawwell put forward a suggestion to his dad about an Australian manager he knew and thought was excellent who was working in Japan.

That frankly was a high risk appointment from a Celtic board who are almost always risk averse. What a job Ange did at Celtic. His signings were mostly superb, many are still in the team while others have been sold for huge profits (Matt O’Riley, Kyogo etc). Ange delivered five trophies from six, a Cameron Carter-Vickers chance at Hampden in that Scottish Cup semi-final would have made it 2-0 and the would have been that. But that one got away.

But we have no complaints and watched that terrible game last Wednesday night only for Ange’s sake. For once the result was more important that the performance and many of the PayPal betting sites were paying out to the Celtic support who all backed Ange by putting our money where our mouths are. For once Ange Postecoglou put his attacking philosophy to one side and parked the bus. Needs must and it worked against an inept Manchester United side.

Whether Ange Postecoglou stays on at Tottenham or goes on to take a different challenge remains to be seem. However the days of the English media and supporters looking down their noses at Ange Postecoglou are well and truly over.

Last Wednesday night in Bilbao Ange made that journalist look like the clown.
