Postecoglou Faces Another Injury Setback as Bergvall Blow Clouds Spurs Win

There’s something oddly poetic in how Tottenham’s season continues to mirror itself — a flourish of progress invariably followed by a sting in the tail. On Thursday night, Spurs cruised to a 3-1 Europa League semi-final win over Bodo/Glimt, a result that felt routine, even commanding. And yet, it was a victory tempered by a fresh concern: Lucas Bergvall’s injury.

The teenage midfielder, recently re-signed and enjoying an impressive campaign, watched the game from the touchline, propped up by crutches and encased in a protective boot. The image alone was enough to sum up another turbulent chapter in Ange Postecoglou’s and Spurs’ season.

Postecoglou Gives Bergvall Injury Update

Speaking post-match, Postecoglou confirmed that Bergvall had “tweaked” his ankle during training: “It’s too early to assess. You know, it’s just the way our season’s gone on, unfortunately, it’s just hugely disappointing for Lucas, he was obviously really excited. He had a big week, re-signing with the club and he’s had such a great year for us.”

There’s no clear timeline yet, and Postecoglou wouldn’t be drawn on whether the Swede will return this season: “We’ll just assess over the next few days, let it settle down and we’ll find the extent of it.”

Spurs Show Composure Despite Disruption

Despite the setback, Tottenham started the match with clarity and purpose. Brennan Johnson’s header inside 38 seconds set the tone, with further goals from James Maddison and Dominic Solanke effectively sealing the leg. A late strike from Ulrik Saltnes gave Bodo/Glimt a glimmer for the return fixture, but Spurs remain firm favourites.

Postecoglou praised the maturity of the display: “Our performance was everything it needed to be… really calm going forward and created good opportunities for ourselves.”

Perspective in Progress

It’s a recurring theme this season — glimpses of the project clicking into place, only to be disrupted by injury or misfortune. Bergvall’s absence won’t derail Spurs, but it’s another reminder that this rebuild under Postecoglou is being written in imperfect strokes.
