Prior to Eintracht Frankfurt’s 1-1 draw against Tottenham Hotspur in the Europa League on Thursday evening, Ange Postecoglou spoke on the future of the on loan Bayern Munich striker Mathys Tel.
Two goals in 10 appearances for the North London side hardly constitute much of a success for the 19-year-old Frenchman. It has long been common knowledge that Bayern hope to recall Tel and several other loanees early ahead of the coming Club World Cup in June. Postecoglou nevertheless defended the young talent and sought to give the impression, interestingly enough, that his €55m purchase option might even be pulled.
“I didn’t actually bring him here just for six months,” the long-time Australian national team coach said. “I think he’s very, very exciting. When you meet him, you realise that he has that certain something. He has enormous confidence in what he wants to do.
“Although he is still young, he can physically handle the Premier League,” Postecoglou continued. “He’s a goal scorer, he can hold his own, he’s got the necessary speed. He will play an important role in our end-of-season push and beyond.“
