Analysis: How Brentford completed Manchester City comeback

Artikelbild:Analysis: How Brentford completed Manchester City comeback

Brentford put in a swashbuckling performance to earn a 2-2 draw with Manchester City in a superb all-round game from the Bees.

In one of the most entertaining ties of the Premier League season so far, Thomas Frank's side gave as good as they got.

At times, the Cityzens looked like their old selves going forward, with Kevin De Bruyne proving instrumental, Savinho causing problems, and Phil Foden continuing to have an apparent grudge against Brentford considering his scoring record (seven in total - the England international has only scored more against Brighton, eight).

There were 39 shots in total during the game, 21 from the visitors and 18 from the home side. Keane Lewis-Potter and Mathias Jensen were the only starting outfield players for Brentford who didn't manage a shot all game.

Although, as often happens, Brentford were able to take the majority of their shots in the 'danger zone', with 14 of Brentford's 18 efforts coming from inside the penalty area. That's more than City, who only managed 13, with Pep Guardiola's side resorting to six efforts outside the box.

Yoane Wissa got his team back in the game in the 82nd minute when Mads Roerslev centred the ball. Wissa knew he had time to control the ball before dispatching his effort.

That goal put Wissa top of Brentford's Premier League goalscoring charts. The forward netted his 37th goal in the English top flight, which now puts him one ahead of Ivan Toney. Wissa was a constant threat in the game, having five shots in total, the joint-most alongside Savinho.

Bryan Mbeumo had three shots himself and was unlucky not to get on the scoresheet, although he was influential with five key passes in total - the most of any Brentford player - and only behind De Bruyne on eight. Mathias Jensen was just behind Mbeumo on four key passes, which was the most he has made in a Premier League game this season.

It was Damsgaard's pass that was instrumental in Wissa's goal, as he sprayed a pass out to the far post for Roerslev. No outfield player placed as many successful long balls as the 24-year-old (five). The midfielder repeated that idea for the equaliser with Lewis-Potter, picking up the ball and sending in a cross that Christian Nørgaard finished.

Damsgaard really has stepped up a level this season and, although he wasn't able to add to his seven league assists (only three players have more), his creativity was vital to his team getting back on level terms.

Brentford captain Nørgaard was another putting in an exemplary performance. He had more touches (68) than any other Brentford player, won five aerial duels (top for Brentford, behind only Erling Haaland on six), and made three interceptions (joint-top alongside Vitaly Janelt and Mateo Kovačić).

As Frank said, Brentford "could’ve won it in the end" - and if it wasn't for the last-ditch defending of Nathan Aké, it may well have been another memorable victory over Guardiola's City. On Aké, he was the only player on the pitch with a better pass success rate (98 per cent) than the Bees defenders Sepp van den Berg (96 per cent) and Nathan Collins (94 per cent).

It will need to be a quick recovery period for Brentford before they welcome another elite team, Liverpool, to Gtech Community Stadium on Saturday. But, if everyone is on the top of their game once again, then perhaps the Bees can get another excellent result.
