Ruben Amorim may be about to face another setback in his Manchester United tenure after already enduring a torrid start to his time in the dugout.

The new head coach was chosen to clean up the mess left by Erik ten Hag in November, just months after INEOS awarded him with a one-year contract extension and another £200 million to spend on his desired signings – with few players deemed ideal fits to Amorim’s newly implemented system.

Yet, he’s attempting to make do with what he’s got, presumably under the premise that he’ll be able to bolster his squad exactly how he sees fit at the end of the campaign. Nobody is expecting United to salvage a Champions League finish anymore, so it’s just about seeing out the term with as respectable a finish as possible.

When the time comes that Amorim is able to welcome his chosen signings to Old Trafford, plenty of reports have already suggested that Viktor Gyokeres, his talisman at Sporting Lisbon, would be top of the shopping list.

Bayern Munich now in ‘pole position’ to beat United to Gyokeres signing

It’s no wonder why, either. Gyokeres has already notched 30 goals and six assists in 28 appearances across all competitions this season, after a term in which he registered an unprecedented 43 goals and 15 assists in 50 appearances.

He is one of the most unstoppable, prolific goalscorers in Europe, and United were ready to use Amorim’s ties to the Swede by prising him towards M16 this year.

However, their hopes of sanctioning his arrival could well be scuppered by Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich. A fresh report from the Daily Star has revealed: “Bayern Munich want to hijack Manchester United’s bid to sign Swedish sensation Viktor Gyokeres. It’s understood the German giants have started talks with the forward’s representatives. Gyokeres has a buy-out clause in his Sporting contract worth £80m – and Bayern bosses are willing to meet it.

“Amorim thought he might be in pole position to sign Gyokeres, due to the close relationship the pair have from working together in Lisbon.

“But the 26-year-old has reservations about joining United, due to the size of the job his former boss is facing at Old Trafford. While Gyokeres would also prefer to join a club operating in the Champions League next season. This puts Bayern in pole position.”
