Ruben Amorim has admitted success in the Europa League this season ‘could change things’ as he looks to rebuild Manchester United.

The Red Devils take on Real Sociedad in the second leg of their last-16 tie tomorrow evening, following a 1-1 draw in Spain last week.

Europe offers the last chance of silverware this season for United, alongside the additional carrot of Champions League qualification. Amid the club’s worst-ever Premier League campaign, winning the Europa League offers a second chance at securing a place in Europe’s top club competition next season.

Speaking at his pre-match press conference, Amorim admitted he was aware of the difference it would make for his side to compete in the Champions League next season.

“We have a clear plan to address next season. We can still reach Champions League, so you never know. It can change the preparation for next season.

“We have a plan and know what to do. In terms of what type of players to bring in.

“This competition [Europa League] could change things [selling players] so we are focused on this game.”

Amorim has come under pressure amid a tough start to his time at Manchester United. However, the 40-year-old has the backing of the board with chief executive Omar Berrada insisting the plan is to give Amorim the tools to succeed.

“I think it’s riskier if you have a coach that doesn’t have a clear idea of how he wants to play,” said Berrada.

“With Ruben we don’t see that risk. When it comes to our recruitment strategy, without commenting too much, the idea we have is to be able to bring in versatile players that can be adaptable to multiple systems.

“Ruben himself has said it’s not about the 3-4-3 tactical formation, it’s about an idea, a concept of how he wants to see the team playing.

“He wants to see the team playing more on the front foot, more of a possession, attacking-based style of football. So for that, you need players that can play in multiple positions that can adapt to that vision that Ruben has.

“And this is what we’re going try to do over the next years in our recruitment.”
