Juventus boss Massimiliano Allegri held back the tears after a 1-0 win over Atalanta on Wednesday and jokingly asked a journalist: ‘Have you sacked me already?’

Juventus ended their two-year trophyless run on Wednesday night by beating Atalanta 1-0 in the Coppa Italia Final in Rome.

Allegri was sent off in the final minutes when he came face-to-face with the fourth official and threw away his jacket in anger.

After the match, he appeared to send away Cristiano Giuntoli and Maurizio Scanavino, even though the Italian tactician denied an on-the-pitch confrontation with the club directors.

Max appeared much more relaxed during a post-match press conference attended by Football Italia and even emotional as he struggled to hold back the tears a couple of times.

This was the case when he replied to the first question, saying: “I can only thank the players because they gifted the club and me a nice victory.”

Allegri could not add anything else and looked visibly emotive also when he replied to the second question.

“I am pretty lucky because I’ve been part of big clubs. I am still part of a big club so I am very happy. Tonight, we must celebrate because we were not favourites. We must congratulate Atalanta for how they played. Above all, I want to wish them good luck for the Europa League Final. For the rest. Juventus means winning and tonight we did it.”

Allegri said his angry reaction, which resulted in a red card, was “normal at the end of an important match” and joked when another reporter asked him about the legacy he leaves after three years at Juventus.

“Have you sacked me already?” he replied smiling.

“Let’s say that the team has an excellent base,” he continued.

“When I returned, in the first two years, the [previous] President Andrea asked me to join a group and reorganise the team, making it sustainable and competitive. Juventus means winning and the lads did it tonight, so we are very happy.”
