Most teams heading up from League One would just be expected to fight for survival, but the Blues spending in the summer of 2024 and Tom Wagner's continued stance of preparing to spend big will have the Bluenoses excited.

Last summer, they pulled off some remarkable signings, including Jay Stansfield, Christoph Klarer, and Alfie May. Now, as the 2025 transfer window approaches, Football Insider are reporting that the Second City club are eyeing a return for former striker Che Adams.

The 28-year-old previously spent three seasons at Birmingham, with his final campaign in 2018-19 seeing him score an impressive 22 goals. He then made a £15 million move to Southampton, where he spent five seasons before joining Torino on a free transfer last summer.

As per Football Insider, Birmingham are prepared to offer Adams a "big-money, blockbuster contract" to entice him to depart Il Toro, for whom he has netted 11 goals this season.

The Scottish international could be the "25+ goal" striker Birmingham are looking for, but his arrival will spell bad news for Alfie May.

Alfie May won't be happy with Che Adams transfer news

Alfie May was signed by Birmingham to be their League One goalscorer and the Blues' number nine has lived up to that title, netting 16 across the season.

At times, he has found himself out of the side, making just 27 starts over the course of the season. However, whenever he does feature, the former Cheltenham Town man gives his all and more often than not makes the most of his opportunity.

That said, with Birmingham now heading into the Championship, there will be understandable concerns over whether the 31-year-old is truly ready for the demands of second-tier football. Having not featured in the division before, the Blues' transfer team have very little to go off and clearly they're going to play their faith in Adams instead.

Of course, aside from a potential move for the Scotsman, the Blues can also rely on their £15 million signing Jay Stansfield, who has already demonstrated his quality in the Championship, scoring 12 goals during the 2023/24 campaign.

All told, there simply isn't room for three goalscorers and if Adams arrives at St Andrews, it wouldn't be a surprise to see May head out the door.

Alfie May will be a victim of Birmingham City's success

Football, of course, has its fairytales - but at the other end of the spectrum, clubs sometimes have to be ruthless, and May could well be the first casualty of Birmingham’s success.

At 31, questions will naturally be asked about whether the striker has any further improvement left in him - and if not, the Championship may prove a step too far.

Should Che Adams make a return to St Andrew’s, he’s likely to want his old number nine shirt back. And if Birmingham spend big on both fee and wages, it’s hard to imagine they wouldn’t hand him that prestigious number.

Sadly, the Blues’ ambitions may well leave May behind. With no experience at the upper end of the Championship and the likes of Adams and Stansfield boasting recent success in the division, it’s only natural that they will be given priority.
